The SKLAN Tournament Schedule.

The day is finally here! We here at SKL are announcing the full SKLAN tournament schedule after teasing games for the last two weeks.

You may be wondering what the hour-long break sections consist of. Those are a mix of three things:

  • Need a break? Use the break time to sit back, relax, get some fresh air.
  • Did a tournament block go a bit longer than we wanted it to? We’ll use part of the break time.
  • Want to play a game in the casual area with other people at the LAN that isn’t on the schedule? Use the break time.

As for the other things on the schedule, we will be asking for the community’s feedback on what to do during each of these sections. Below are some of the ideas that we have come up with.

Community Voted

We have, and will continue to ask for player’s votes for our Community Voted section. This can be a game that has been played earlier in the night that we want more time for, or a game no one has ever heard of, or a game that we accidentally missed! You want it? Suggest and VOTE for it on our Discord (discord.gg/sklesports)!

While a lot of these events might seem “hardcore”, we assure you, this LAN is whatever you make it to be. Want to play one game the entire night with your friends? You can do that! Want to play in as many tournaments as possible to try and prove your stuff against other people in Western Canada? You can do that too! Want to grab random people and play other LAN favourites such as Warcraft 3, Gary’s Mod, Jackbox Games or Quake? You can absolutely do that too!

If you have not signed up for the LAN already, our early bird pricing of $30 ($10 off the door price) ends August 19th, 2018. You can register by clicking here. If that wasn’t incentive enough, signing up before August 19th, 2018 also enters you to win both an MSI Interceptor Mouse and Keyboard!

For anyone attending the Warhammer ITC or SKL Smashkatoon, remember: if you decide to come to the LAN afterwards, you receive $10 off your LAN ticket. So if you sign up for Smashkatoon or the ITC before August 19th, entry to the LAN will only be $20!

What should I bring to SKLAN?

  • Computer/Laptop
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Headset
  • Ethernet cable. The longer the better. We recommend 20+ feet.
  • Power bar (we can’t provide one for everyone)
  • Extra cash. There will be a snack concession, bar, and restaurant on the premises.

What should I not bring to SKLAN?

  • Absolutely no USB drives, external hard drives, etc. that contain illegal/pirated software.
  • No outside food, drinks, or snacks.

How do I prepare for SKLAN?

  • Download and update all of your games beforehand. Internet bandwidth may be limited.
  • If you are using Steam, make sure to set it to offline mode before attending.
  • There will be lots of people in and out and we’re in for a long event, so make sure you’re being courteous and practicing proper hygiene before the event to make sure we all have the best time possible.

SKL Academy, a Warcraft Community

With World of Warcraft: The Battle for Azeroth approaching, SKL has formed a WoW community! SKL Academy is a place for our community to find group members, form raids, and learn in a fun and patient environment! For now, this is a Horde only community, but depending on interest we may create another for the Alliance. SKL Academy will be holding monthly in game events such as raid groups, rated PvP, and mythic+ dungeons. Join now as we all prepare for Battle for Azeroth!

SKLAN, Saskatchewan’s Largest LAN Party.

SKL eSports is proud to partner with Airline Hotels to present SKLAN! That’s right, 24 hours of gaming in one amazing venue!

Pre-registration for SKLAN will be $30 and signups at the door will be $40. Bring your own computer/equipment will be in effect. This includes power cables for your computer and monitor(s), a power bar, an Ethernet cable (longer the better), and any other equipment needed for your computer. There will be an assortment of door prizes given out throughout the night. What would a LAN event be without some energy drinks? Red Bull was kind enough to provide us with some free Red Bull to SKLAN participants!

Tournaments for various games will be held over the entire 24 hour period, and SKL will be creating a game list to ensure you have everything downloaded, updated and ready to play before the event happens! Tournaments and events at the LAN will include (so far):

One Up

Hello everyone!

Unfortunately, SKL will be postponing Smashfest 3, which was to be held in Regina from June 2nd, 2018, until October 20, 2018. This is not something to be disappointed about, however. SKL is going into a new frontier, as we are expanding past our Saskatchewan borders and bringing to everyone an event held at one of the most iconic venues in Alberta.

Welcome to SKL Smashfest: West Edmonton Mall.

That’s right, SKL will be hosting our iconic Super Smash Brothers tournament on the Newcap Radio stage at the West. Edmonton. Mall. This will be online pre-registration only and spots WILL fill up so make sure to sign up as soon as you can. For those of you who have already registered for SKL 3, if you would like to use that registration towards Smashfest WEM, congratulations! You are already signed up for one of the biggest Smash Bros tournaments in Western Canada.

Further details regarding the event, prizing and registration details will come in the coming weeks, but we are super excited to be expanding into Alberta. For fans of our other esports, take note. SKL is no longer just Saskatchewan Esports.

Western Canada…We are coming.

Smashfest 3, Presented by IKS Live!

SKL eSports is proud to announce Smashfest 3, presented by IKS Live! This Super Smash Bros event is a one-day Singles and Doubles tournament taking place June 2nd at the Turvey Centre in Regina, SK! The tournament will be for both Wii U AND Melee, with the SKL Smash Circuit being continued in the Wii U tournament.

Come watch the games live at the Turvey Centre, hang out in the Legacy Room to play retro games, mini-tournaments, or grab a snack at the concession and licensed bar. More details to come in the coming weeks!

Hearthstone Invitational

Hello everyone! We here at SKL wanted to take a brief moment to talk about the Hearthstone Invitational occurring February 24th at the Twisted Tartan.

First and foremost, we would like to congratulate the following people for their qualification of the Hearthstone Invitational: Alarid, VltCtrlDefeat, Inoshishi, Hitchens, MrJoeNorm, Woodstove, Serzeskimo and Edge. We would also like to congratulate Corvikk on his IQ win, but unfortunately he notified SKL last week he would not be able to attend the invitational. We hope to see him out next year! As for the 8 players participating, they have proven to be the best players in the province and we are looking forward to showcasing their talent within the NEW meta, due to the nerfs recently announced by Blizzard. We will be streaming the event live from the Twisted Tartan (2404 8th St E in Saskatoon), and we encourage anyone that would like to watch to come check it out and use their SKL Player Cards for discounted drinks while they enjoy watching some Hearthstone on the big screen! The event will start at 11 am and will continue until the grand finals occur (approximately 7 pm).

After the Invitational, SKL will be having another SKL Beer Night. This will be the first to be held at the Twisted Tartan. Come hang out with the casters, fellow players (whether you play League, Hearthstone, Smash or any other game), and friends! SKL will be selling tickets for the beer night, where you can enjoy some great beer specials, that will run from 8 to 10 pm.

We would like to address a concern that was raised from an outside source about Edge’s qualification for this tournament. While he is a part of the SKL team, his qualification comes from the five points he received for finishing 2nd at a tournament BEFORE he was an official part of the team. When he helped create the IQ circuit, the goal was for there to be enough point collectors that his slot would be phased out. Unfortunately, the November IQ did not occur due to lack of participants, which meant Edge still had enough points to qualify for this tournament. When the other player who received enough points to attempt to qualify for the Invitational was contacted to potentially take his place, he was unable to make the date work.

We at SKL believe in competitive integrity, and as such any and all prizes that Edge may receive for competing in this tournament will be distributed to the other participants. Also, decklists for this tournament will be submitted beforehand to a separate SKL Admin and distributed to all players at least a week before the tournament to ensure that Edge is not given any other information that other players do not receive. When the other players in the invitational were given this information, they agreed that this was more than fair and they also see no problem in Edge competing in the tournament. This also helps to ensure the full eight players are used for the bracket, rather than giving a random player in the tournament a bye due to only having seven people.

Registration for the Second Recreational League has Opened!

The first split of the SKL League of Legends Rec League officially concluded a couple weeks ago, with Anything Deemed Inappropriate coming out victorious over White or Wong. We would like to offer our sincerest congratulations to both teams. Now, onto the next split!

Registration for the next Rec League split will be opening on February 6th! With that being said, there are a few changes we are going to make for this upcoming split. First of all, and most prominently, we will be splitting the league into two divisions: Competitive and Relaxed. This decision was made in order to ensure that everyone can still join the Rec League, while also improving league parity.

Competitive Division

Competitive will be geared towards higher ranked players looking for a more competitive atmosphere, while still maintaining the relaxed tone of the Rec League. The Competitive division will feature playoffs and a grand final at the end of the regular season.  We will also place more of an emphasis on streaming these matches. However, unlike last Rec League split, games in this division will be scheduled by SKL Admins based on pre-provided availability of teams. This division will also feature a to be determined prize pool. Team registration fees for this division will be $10 per player.

Relaxed Division

Relaxed will be geared more towards players who are just looking to chill and have a good time playing games with friends. There will be no prize pool for this division, and they will not be guaranteed streamed games. However, they will be guaranteed fun. The scheduling of games for this division during the week is up to the two teams. If a scheduled time cannot be agreed between two teams for that week, a scheduled time will be chosen by the SKL Admin Team for early the following week. Team registration fees for this division will be $4 per player.

Free agents will be put into a general pool and available to sub for either division, to ensure maximum availability of subs. Free agent registration is $5.

For the most part, the rest of the protocols from last season will remain in place. Teams will be matched up with another team once per week to play a best of two series. After a scheduled game time has been agreed upon by two teams, or before the SKL-scheduled game time, a tournament code can be generated in Battlefy for the match. However, it is important to not generate the tournament code too far ahead of time, as the generated codes expire after twenty-four hours. Battlefy will track all of the stats for the matches, as well as reporting the outcome of the match, through proper use of the tournament code.

As always, if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us through our Facebook page or on our Discord channel. And remember, let’s keep it light, fun, and recreational out there. ?

Your closest friend,

Kevin “BigBooty” Bode
