2019 Recreational League 1 Registration Now Open!

SKL Esports is happy to officially open registration for our first of back to back Recreational League of Legends Leagues in 2019! That’s right. We are officially committing to back to back rec leagues, with more information to follow regarding our plans for Autumn League of Legends! Stay tuned to our social media for details, or if you aren’t apart of our discord, check it out at discord.gg/sklesports

This is recreational league is focused on a fun and entertaining experience above all else, and helping to develop new friendships and teams! We want everyone who loves League of Legends to be able to play in this league, regardless of skill level.

Don’t have a team? Have a few friends but not enough for a full team? No problem! We are allowing for free-agent registration and a free-agent pool. This will allow teams to pick up solo registered players to fill in their gaps, or grab a sub or two for a game if needed. This range of flexibility wouldn’t work in a wholly competitive environment when team segregation is important. Thankfully with a more relaxed atmosphere we can accommodate a much wider range of people.

As a solo player, if you don’t end up playing at least two games during the season, we will refund your registration. So why not register?

Registration closes: February 8th, 2019 @ 11:59PM

Depending on numbers, we are running a either a round robin or swiss format tournament for the recreation league. If we have enough teams to use a swiss style, it uses a form of matchmaking and ranking in order to match teams with other teams of equal skill. Because of this, your first match or two might not be the closest, but we’ll do our best to avoid that. By the end, everyone will hopefully be able to play challenging, even matches.

Matches will use Battlefy’s auto stat tracking and match completion system to ensure fair reporting, as well as tournament codes to make it easy for everyone to get into the game with the correct settings. SKL officials will schedule each match to be played within a 24 hour period.

You can learn more about the format and rules on our recreational rules page.

SKL admins will be scheduling games for teams based on the availability given in the registration form. We ask that teams give at least 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day per week that generally work, so that we can schedule matches for teams to be broadcast on our stream (twitch.tv/skl_esports). We will be streaming at least one match per week, and we will try to have every team on stream at least once!

SaskTel Joins the Battle!

SKL Esports and SaskTel are excited to announce an ongoing sponsorship, heading into 2019! As a locally founded and based company ourselves, we are proud to work with SaskTel, and to become part of their strong focus on connecting communities right here in Saskatchewan. Local community building has always been one of our main focuses here at SKL, so in tandem with SaskTel, we hope to help each other grow our gaming communities across the province.

Even though the esports industry is booming across the globe, it has yet to truly take hold in both Saskatchewan, and Canada as a whole. Our goal here at SKL has always been to change that, and SaskTel’s sponsorship will help us achieve that goal. The competitive esports community in Saskatchewan has shown a lot of potential, and with the support of a company as significant as SaskTel, it won’t be long before Saskatchewan is being represented on esports stages across the country.

This sponsorship will provide many benefits to our audience. Using SaskTel’s superior infrastructure, we will be able to create more frequent and higher quality content, all at the consistently high speeds that only SaskTel can offer. We will both be able to grow our audiences, allowing us to have a broader reach across the province, and increase both SKL’s and SaskTel’s brand recognition as a legitimate player in the esports industry. SaskTel will be sponsoring all of our upcoming 2019 Saskatchewan based events, and we here at SKL can’t wait to bring them to you!

Overall, we believe this new relationship will help us to build and grow local gaming communities for both competitive and recreational gamers alike.

“SKL Esports is the premier competitive esports league in Western Canada and we’re excited to sponsor them in 2019,” said Doug Burnett, Acting SaskTel President and CEO. “With the incredibly fast speeds and low latency we can deliver over infiNET, SaskTel is the clear choice for Saskatchewan gamers looking to take their skills to the next level.”

Be on the lookout for more exciting news about our upcoming events in 2019!

See you in the new year,

The SKL Admin Team

We here at SKL are so excited that Smashfest, in partnership with IKS Media, the West Edmonton Mall, London Drugs, Hyper X, and Redbull, is coming up right around the corner! As it approaches, here is some information on the events that will be taking place at the West Edmonton Mall on October 20th, as well as what you can do to prepare for this awesome event.

Just like previous Smashfests, there will be areas for friends, family, and other players to watch the tournament as it happens. Our lovely casters will be on hand to broadcast and stream the event. Everyone is welcome to come watch the event, hang out, and enjoy the games!

Registration for the main tournament is now live at smash.gg/sklwem! For this event, you must per-register and prepay before the event. We are unable to accept registrations at the venue on the day of the tournament. You can also only enter three out of four events (Smash 4 Singles, Smash 4 Doubles, Smash Melee Singles and Smash Melee Doubles), in order to prevent disruption of the flow of the event.

After Smashfest at the West Edmonton Mall, SKL will be hosting an Official After Party, with details to come in the next week! The event will be held at the mall as well, so you won’t even have to leave the venue to come party with your favourite players and casters! This will be another opportunity to get discounted drinks, using your SKL Player Cards, which you receive for participating in any SKL events, including this Smashfest!

While we will likely continue support of Super Smash Brothers Melee, this will be our farewell tournament to Super Smash Brothers for the Wii U. Therefore, we are incredibly excited to announce our first Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament coming up in January! That’s right, we will be starting a brand-new Super Smash Brothers circuit in 2019 with Smash Ultimate, and our first flagship event will be held at the Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon.
