Registration for Smashfest 4 is now open.

SKL eSports is proud to announce Western Canada’s first premier Smash Bros Ultimate tournament presented by IKS Media and the Saskatoon Blades. The event will be held at SaskTel Center in Saskatoon on January 12, 2019. With the game being released just over a month before this tournament, this is the best time to come try your skills against everyone in Western Canada!

With previous Smashfests at the University of Regina and the West Edmonton Mall, we are happy to return to the Sasktel Centre a 2nd time for our 4th Smashfest, with this one expected to be bigger than ever. Growing from 60 to 100 to 120 players, we expect this tournament to be our biggest yet by far.

Just like the last Smashfest, there will be areas for friends/family/other players to watch the tournament as it happens. Our lovely casters will be on hand to broadcast and stream the event. Everyone is welcomed to come watch the event, but to have a chance to play this game you must participate in this tournament!

The Saskatoon Blades are also hosting a video game theme night on Friday, January 11th, 2019 when they play against the Calgary Hitmen! Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to meet and greet with Smashfest contestants and SKL casters/admins! There will be video game vendors on hand promoting new products and a gaming area set up the night of the game so fans can will have a chance to try out the brand new Smash Bros game before the tournament on the 12th!

The SKLAN Tournament Schedule.

The day is finally here! We here at SKL are announcing the full SKLAN tournament schedule after teasing games for the last two weeks.

You may be wondering what the hour-long break sections consist of. Those are a mix of three things:

  • Need a break? Use the break time to sit back, relax, get some fresh air.
  • Did a tournament block go a bit longer than we wanted it to? We’ll use part of the break time.
  • Want to play a game in the casual area with other people at the LAN that isn’t on the schedule? Use the break time.

As for the other things on the schedule, we will be asking for the community’s feedback on what to do during each of these sections. Below are some of the ideas that we have come up with.

Reminder that SKLAN is on August 25th, 2018 at 12:00PM until August 26th at 12:00PM at the Travelodge Hotel in Saskatoon (106 Circle Drive West) in Galaxy’s A and B.

Community Voted

We have, and will continue to ask for player’s votes for our Community Voted section. This can be a game that has been played earlier in the night that we want more time for, or a game no one has ever heard of, or a game that we accidentally missed! You want it? Suggest and VOTE for it on our Discord (discord.gg/sklesports)!

While a lot of these events might seem “hardcore”, we assure you, this LAN is whatever you make it to be. Want to play one game the entire night with your friends? You can do that! Want to play in as many tournaments as possible to try and prove your stuff against other people in Western Canada? You can do that too! Want to grab random people and play other LAN favourites such as Warcraft 3, Gary’s Mod, Jackbox Games or Quake? You can absolutely do that too!

If you have not signed up for the LAN already, our early bird pricing of $30 ($10 off the door price) ends August 19th, 2018. You can register by clicking here. If that wasn’t incentive enough, signing up before August 19th, 2018 also enters you to win both an MSI Interceptor Mouse and Keyboard!

For anyone attending the Warhammer ITC or SKL Smashkatoon, remember: if you decide to come to the LAN afterwards, you receive $10 off your LAN ticket. So if you sign up for Smashkatoon or the ITC before August 19th, entry to the LAN will only be $20!

What should I bring to SKLAN?

  • Computer/Laptop
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Headset
  • Ethernet cable. The longer the better. We recommend 20+ feet.
  • Power bar (we can’t provide one for everyone)
  • Extra cash. There will be a snack concession, bar, and restaurant on the premises.

What should I not bring to SKLAN?

  • Absolutely no USB drives, external hard drives, etc. that contain illegal/pirated software.
  • No outside food, drinks, or snacks.

How do I prepare for SKLAN?

  • Download and update all of your games beforehand. Internet bandwidth may be limited.
  • If you are using Steam, make sure to set it to offline mode before attending.
  • There will be lots of people in and out and we’re in for a long event, so make sure you’re being courteous and practicing proper hygiene before the event to make sure we all have the best time possible.

Smashfest 3, Presented by IKS Live!

SKL eSports is proud to announce Smashfest 3, presented by IKS Live! This Super Smash Bros event is a one-day Singles and Doubles tournament taking place June 2nd at the Turvey Centre in Regina, SK! The tournament will be for both Wii U AND Melee, with the SKL Smash Circuit being continued in the Wii U tournament.

Come watch the games live at the Turvey Centre, hang out in the Legacy Room to play retro games, mini-tournaments, or grab a snack at the concession and licensed bar. More details to come in the coming weeks!

Registration for the Second Recreational League has Opened!

The first split of the SKL League of Legends Rec League officially concluded a couple weeks ago, with Anything Deemed Inappropriate coming out victorious over White or Wong. We would like to offer our sincerest congratulations to both teams. Now, onto the next split!

Registration for the next Rec League split will be opening on February 6th! With that being said, there are a few changes we are going to make for this upcoming split. First of all, and most prominently, we will be splitting the league into two divisions: Competitive and Relaxed. This decision was made in order to ensure that everyone can still join the Rec League, while also improving league parity.

Competitive Division

Competitive will be geared towards higher ranked players looking for a more competitive atmosphere, while still maintaining the relaxed tone of the Rec League. The Competitive division will feature playoffs and a grand final at the end of the regular season.  We will also place more of an emphasis on streaming these matches. However, unlike last Rec League split, games in this division will be scheduled by SKL Admins based on pre-provided availability of teams. This division will also feature a to be determined prize pool. Team registration fees for this division will be $10 per player.

Relaxed Division

Relaxed will be geared more towards players who are just looking to chill and have a good time playing games with friends. There will be no prize pool for this division, and they will not be guaranteed streamed games. However, they will be guaranteed fun. The scheduling of games for this division during the week is up to the two teams. If a scheduled time cannot be agreed between two teams for that week, a scheduled time will be chosen by the SKL Admin Team for early the following week. Team registration fees for this division will be $4 per player.

Free agents will be put into a general pool and available to sub for either division, to ensure maximum availability of subs. Free agent registration is $5.

For the most part, the rest of the protocols from last season will remain in place. Teams will be matched up with another team once per week to play a best of two series. After a scheduled game time has been agreed upon by two teams, or before the SKL-scheduled game time, a tournament code can be generated in Battlefy for the match. However, it is important to not generate the tournament code too far ahead of time, as the generated codes expire after twenty-four hours. Battlefy will track all of the stats for the matches, as well as reporting the outcome of the match, through proper use of the tournament code.

As always, if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us through our Facebook page or on our Discord channel. And remember, let’s keep it light, fun, and recreational out there. ?

Smashfest Saskatoon

We here at SKL are so excited that Smashfest, in partnership with the Saskatoon Blades and IKS Media, is only nine days away. With it being so close, here is some information on what all will be taking place at the SaskTel Centre on January 27th, as well as what you can do to prepare for this awesome event.

First of all, and perhaps most excitingly, we are happy to announce that the prize pool has been increased from $1000 to $1500! This prize pool is sponsored by both the Saskatoon Blades and Tourism Saskatoon.

Not interested in playing in the main tournament? That’s okay! For those of you who were at the last Smashfest, we are re-opening the Legacy Gaming Room, this time sponsored by RegenStorm Arcade and Game On Amusements! For just $15, you can play in any and all the games we have offered in the concourse at SaskTel Centre for as long as you like. Included in your $15 purchase, you will also receive the all new SKL Player Card! These Player Cards get you discounted drinks at the Twisted Tartan for the rest of 2018. We are in contact with other sponsors to add to the benefits these Player Cards offer, so make sure to sign up for the Legacy Room to be the first to get your hands on these exclusive discounts!

Just like the last Smashfest, there will be areas for friends/family/other players to watch the tournament as it happens. Our lovely casters will be on hand to broadcast and stream the event. Everyone is welcome to come watch the event, check out all the Legacy Gaming Room games, or just come hang out. There will be mini tournaments happening around the arena for the duration, including Doubles for Wii U (registration online at smash.gg/skl2) and Super Smash Bros. Melee (registration at the venue) so don’t miss it! There will be concession stands open at SaskTel Centre for food and beverages.

Registration for the main tournament is now live at smash.gg/skl2. You can pay online or at the door. Access to the Legacy Gaming Room is also included in your tournament entry fee! Of the initial 128 available main tournament slots, approximately 40 remain, so be sure to pre-register! Legacy Room bracelets will be exclusively sold at the door.

After Smashfest, SKL is hosting the first Smashfest After Party at the Twisted Tartan (2404 8th St East in Saskatoon) starting at 9:00! This will be the first opportunity to use your SKL Player Cards to get discounted drinks at the Twisted Tartan. It will also be a great chance to get to know some of the players and SKL casters!

Also, be sure to come out to the SaskTel Centre on Friday night, as the Saskatoon Blades take on the Edmonton Oil Kings in their video game themed night! We will have SKL staff and some of the top Smash players in attendance to play some exhibition games. If you want to see if you have what it takes against some of the best smash players in Western Canada, come check it out.

If you need a place to stay in Saskatoon Friday or Saturday, the Comfort Suites (203 Bill Hunter Ave) is offering discounted rooms at $84 a night, for either two double beds or a single queen bed, until January 21st! So make sure to book your hotel room before that date!

Hope to see you all there!
